Shimano have been slow on the uptake with double chainsets, but this new XT one is quality, as long as you just want conventional axles. The diagonally profiled arms with thick backswept spider look much better than the old XTs. Combined with the deep webs on the chainrings they feel stiffer too. Weight is on par for a £200 chainset too.

Ramped and pinned shifting is typically excellent for Shimano. The armour plate inner rings seem to last far longer than most, and while we’ve not had our test set long it’s looking untouched so far. Years of quiet evolution mean Shimano’s external bottom brackets last really well these days too. The only real beef is that there’s no BB30 axle version, but you could run adaptors in the
