The answer is in its silky, stretchy fabric. Its non-membrane tight weave makes it a wonderfully lightweight, quick drying layer that protects you from the worst of the chill wind while letting just enough through to breathe fantastically well and stop condensation build-up.
On chilly hilltops we"ve even resorted to pulling the small hood up, which fits neatly under a helmet because it"s so thin. It keeps a chill wind from evaporating sweat soaked hair and easily pulls out of the way when not in use.
