The softshell fabric is brushed on the inside so even on days we wore it solo it was still comfortable – with all that softness doing a sterling wicking job too. The fit is also excellent. Slim and draught-excluding on the hips but still with plenty of room through the back and shoulders so that any extreme moves we made didn’t translate into a rucked up hem.

A large part of the appeal of this top for us is the combination of the wind and water resistant body with what Pearl Izumi calls Direct-Vent panels that stop you overheating. We wore this across a range of temperature conditions and anticipate that it will see us from now until spring, layered up or down as necessary.

The rear pocket may look like it’s a zipped single, but inside there are three dividers to stop the contents merging into one indiscernible heap. On top of the already high performance appeal of this jacket it’s details like this, along with the easy-grab zip pulls and soft thumb looped cuffs, that make the PRO 1
